Standard Chartered–Sadguru Eye Care Education Academy Launches in Chitrakoot to Train 20,000+ Eye Care Professionals

Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh, Shri Sadguru Seva Sangh Trust (SSSST) and Standard Chartered have jointly launched the Standard Chartered–Sadguru Eye Care Education Academy in Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh, a major new investment in India’s eye-care workforce.

The academy has set out an ambitious training target: more than 20,000 eye care professionals over the next three years, with a defining focus on creating opportunities for women from underprivileged and rural communities.

The launch was inaugurated by Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Shri Rajendra Shukla, in the presence of several senior figures from government, healthcare, and industry, including former UPSC member Rajiv Nayan Choubey, Standard Chartered India’s Head of Sustainability Karuna Bhatia, and SSSST Director and Executive Trustee Dr. Elesh Jain.

1. Addressing a Critical Gap in India’s Eye Care Workforce

Speaking at the launch, Shri Rajendra Shukla described the academy as an important step toward building skilled human resources in ophthalmology and eye care, an area where India continues to face a significant shortage of trained professionals relative to patient need.

Dr. Elesh Jain outlined the scope of the academy’s programming, which will include residential and short-term training courses for:

  • Ophthalmologists
  • Allied ophthalmic personnel
  • Community health workers
  • Eye care managers

Training will combine simulation-based skill laboratories with digital learning platforms, allowing the academy to deliver both hands-on clinical practice and scalable, technology-enabled instruction, a blended model designed to prepare learners for real-world clinical and community health settings.

2. A Strong Commitment to Women’s Empowerment

One of the academy’s clearest priorities is expanding access to healthcare careers for women in rural and underprivileged communities. According to academy officials, at least 50% of trainees in ophthalmology and management programmes will be women, and more than 70% of students enrolled in allied ophthalmic programmes will be women.

This focus reflects a broader and growing recognition across the healthcare sector: closing India’s eye care workforce gap and expanding economic opportunity for women in rural areas are deeply connected goals.

3. Training That Leads Directly to Employment

A standout feature of the academy’s model is its commitment to employment-linked learning. Graduates of the long-term allied health and healthcare management programmes will be guaranteed employment opportunities, primarily within Sadguru Netra Chikitsalaya’s extensive rural healthcare network.

This design choice matters. Many large-scale training initiatives struggle to convert completed training into real employment outcomes. By building a direct pipeline from classroom to community healthcare role, the academy is positioning itself as a model for how skilling investments can translate into lasting workforce participation, not just certificates.

4. The Scale of Long-Term Impact

Officials project that, over time, the academy’s training output is expected to include:

  • Approximately 4,500 doctors
  • More than 11,000 allied ophthalmic personnel
  • Over 20,000 healthcare professionals in total
  • Thousands of community health workers and healthcare managers

The downstream impact of this trained workforce is expected to reach more than one million patients through improved access to quality eye care across underserved regions of India.

5. A Notable Gathering for India’s Healthcare and Skilling Ecosystem

The launch drew leaders from across healthcare, government, and global public health research, including Prof. G.V.S. Murthy (President, PRASHO Foundation and Distinguished Professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine) and Prof. B.R. Shamanna (Professor, School of Medical Sciences, University of Hyderabad), underscoring the scale and credibility of the initiative.

NuVeda Learning’s CEO and Co-Founder, Dr. Balasubramanian Krishnan, was honoured to be invited as a guest at the launch, a reflection of the key role of the CALF™ LMS/LXP’s as the technological backbone of the Sadguru Trust’s work to educate large numbers of healthcare professionals.

6. Why This Matters for Healthcare Skilling in India

Initiatives like the Standard Chartered–Sadguru Eye Care Education Academy point to a broader shift already underway across Indian healthcare: the move toward blended, technology-enabled training models that can scale to meet workforce demand without compromising on practical, hands-on clinical skill-building.

As more institutions adopt simulation labs, digital learning platforms, and structured employment pathways, the lessons from large-scale efforts like this academy will likely shape how healthcare workforce development is approached across the country in the years ahead.

NuVeda Learning works with organisations across healthcare, pharmaceuticals, retail, financial services, and professional training to design and deliver large-scale learning programmes through CALF™, its AI-powered LXP/LMS platform.
